Inventions

Karl Braun is known for two main inventions: the cathode ray tube and the cat’s-whisker diode. This page will give a brief overview of what these two inventions are, and what they have been used for since their creation.

Karl Braun invented the cathode ray tube in 1897. The cathode ray tube is a vacuum tube through which electrons are fired. This firing of electrons can be used to find electrical waveforms and to project images. The discovery of the electron was made possible through this device. Throughout the mid-to-late 20th century, it was widely used to project images (see the picture of the cathode ray tube television). Though the cathode ray tube is scarcely used for projecting images given more recent technology, it is capable of immediate-dislay of inputs and is a very useful device.

Cat’s-Whisker Diode (also known as the Crystal Diode Rectifier)

Karl Braun invented the cat’s-whisker diode in 1898. The cat’s-whisker diode was used in wireless telegraphy from the time of its invention until the mid-20th century. It allowed for the receiving of radio signals across long distances and is what made wireless communications possible for several decades. Though it was later replaced by better technology, its important role in history for making wireless communication possible is undeniable.
